Waldine Clarke Obituary

WALDINE MACKEY CLARKE was an only child, born to Lawrence Mackey and Olga Mae Morris on July 24, 1935. Having professed a hope in Christ at an early age, Waldine joined her mother, Olga Morris at the Mt. Olive Baptist Church in the early 60’s under the leadership of Reverend H. A. Sneed.

She graduated from the original L. C. Anderson High School in Austin Texas. After graduation, Waldine met and married Sgt. Major Albert Clarke.  As a military wife she was stationed on and off in various states and countries which at time took her away from the Mt. Olive membership. It was during a tour in Germany that Albert and Waldine added to their family their only child, Sonya Michelle Clarke.

Waldine had a long work career which includes a run with the Driskill Hotel, Mueller Airport, and the Austin Club. Her longest tenure was at the Headliner Liners Club where after 30 years she retired in the position of wait-staff  Supervisor.

Mom enjoyed giving back to her community.  She joined the Elk Lodge in 1975, and was a life-long member.  During her years of service with the Elks, her positions included Member of Texas Temple #1254, past State President, past Grand Daughter Ruler (the highest honor you can obtain), Col. of Antler Guard Company B and Nettie Carter Jackson Council Member.  She often worked with the Elks youth department and co-sponsored the annual Easter Egg Hunt and Juneteenth parade.

She enjoyed her retirement years surrounded by her adopted grandchildren, family members and friends, watching her favorite TV shows (Walking Dead and Westerns), and listening to music (especially old Blues tunes).

Waldine was preceded in death by her parents and husband.  She leaves to cherish her memory:  a loving daughter, Sonya Michelle Clarke of Austin; god-daughter, Cassandra Enoch Mitchell (Bobby), Austin; godson, Michael Branon of Austin;  adopted daughter, Sanai Cashe Schutz of Atlanta GA; adopted daughter, Lisa Mitchell of Austin; granddaughter, Latrecia G. Washington, Austin; great-grandsons, Nehemiah Isiah and Noah Josiah Nunez; and special friends, JoAnn Dewitty and Gayle M. Williams; the Daughters of Texas Temple #1254; the Brothers of Central Star Lodge #1631; several special adopted grandchildren, and a host of loving relatives and friends.
